5 Things I Can't Stand About Going to the Doctor: part 4 of 5
If there is one thing I cannot stand about going to the doctor, it is poor customer service from support staff. All you need to do to have good customer service is to smile and be responsive to the patient. It is amazing how difficult this can be for some. For example, how about the nurse that comes in the examining room and barely says two words to you throughout the interaction. I am not there for a social visit but being around pleasant support staff can really help put the patient at ease. Or how about the receptionist who is seems annoyed that you are checking in at the front desk or need to ask a question? I don't have much tolerance for any of this and will usually mention it the physician. If enough people mention it, maybe the physician will address the problem with the support staff or replace him or her if necessary. Click here for the next post.

I have a terrific example. I am overweight. I know it. I exercise. I walk miles, every day. Lift weights. My BP is 110/70. bloods good. I am a female. I am over 50. I have a college degree. I am not a stupid person. A very rude internist (the last time I every stepped into his office)said to me. Lose weight! Then he did a little fake ballet piroutte around the room and said "Look at me I'm not fat and I like Twinkies." I know you are G rated but the man is an S*B. If I knew what to sue him for I would. Jerks like him should be punished by some medical organization. I do my best to tell this ancedote to everyone I meet in our town. I hope it hurts his practice.
Did you think about writing a letter to the internist describing his behavior and your reaction to it, cc-ing the letter to your local medical association and state medical board? I also like that you are telling everyone you know about it!
So far, I've had all the experiences in doctors offices that MedFriendly is describing, but I've also had the opposite experiences...very courteous and friendly receptionists, nurses and doctors! Oh, how wonderful!
I'm a retired Social Worker and believe me I know what it can cost to be courteouos and respectful on a day when I've endured every insult imaginable from clients and others in the 'helping' professions. But it always paid great dividends in the long run to continue behaving like a fully responsible adult, for my clients but also for me!
