Guest blog entry: Dr. Anonymous

It is time for the weekly guest blog series and I am happy to reveal this week's guest blogger, the well known medical blogger, Doctor Anoynmous. He is a family physician in Ohio who has a fascinating blogging website that I urge you to check out by clicking on the link above. As usual, this blog entry was written exclusively for MedFriendly.com. With that, I give you Dr Anonymous…

Family Physician: The Doctor For You

If I were to ask you the definition of a Family Physician, what would you say? Most people would say it is the doctor you go to for your cough and colds. And, this is true, but the specialty of Family Medicine is so much more.

Family Medicine physicians specialize in ALL of you. What do I mean by that? Some docs don't have to look at a chart to know your name or know how you're feeling. Family medicine focuses on the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of their patients and families. We know how your family's health history and social situation can affect your health.

Family Medicine physicians receive training to become familiar with the most up to date technologies and treatments. Preventative medicine philosophy is something that is emphasized and is a priority in Family Medicine. Preventing a health problem is definitely better than trying to overcome one.

Family Medicine physicians take the time to synthesize and synergize information from a variety of sources whether it be from you, your family, from the latest medical literature, from the internet, and from other specialists - to give you the best health care possible.

I'm proud to call myself a Family Medicine specialist - a physician who specializes in all of you.

Thanks so much for the opportunity to write a guest blog entry for MedFriendly.com. I invite you to take some time to visit my blog at DoctorAnonymous.com to learn more about me.

Hi Dr A- I'll bet your patients adore you.

I've had my PCP for about 17 years and fortunately I don't see much of him but I do enjoy seeing him when I do go. He always gives me an extended visit and we both talk. It is about my medical stuff but we share the same faith in God and so we get off into other discussions, and sometimes he quotes C.S. Lewis when it pertains to why I am there. He has also prayed with me.

This is NOT something he advertises at all. As our pt/doc relationship bonded over time we realized we had this connection. probably me bringing something up.

I love that he has this spiritual side that he has opened up with and so he indeed is a doc that believes in treating mind, body and spirit and after all they're all connected.

I also like that he self discloses at appropriate times when it fits in and then of course over time we have discussed our family events or histories, etc.

My only regret is that he only works out of a larger hospital in another county and so I have another doc that I also see who has taken over my case when I have been admitted to our local hospital-fortunately only twice under his service. However...I find myself splitting my visits, when one could do it, but I will never give up going to my favorite PCP. Besides, if ever I did have something more involved then I would probably go to that larger hospital anyway.

You know what I think is neat about being a family physician over a specialist. I guess there could be exceptions but you get to possibly treat generations of a family.

Working in ER registration for 20 years, I have seen the elderly die, their kids become older, their kids become adult now raising their young families. A lot can happen in 20 years! I can only imagine the bond you will establish. :)

Thanks for the post!
