Insectifuge comes from the Latin word “in” meaning “within,” the Latin word “secare” meaning “to cut,” and then Latin word “fugo” which means “to put to flight.” Put the words together and you get “to put to flight to cut within.” The phrase “to cut within” refers to the notched appearance of insects.
