La Leche League
A volunteer group that offers information and encouragement to mothers who want to breast-feed. The organization was formed in 1956 by a small group of nursing mothers after breast-feeding rates in the U.S. dropped to about 20%. Now, about 70% of mothers breast-feed. La Leche League now has an international reach and is technically known as La Leche League International (LLLI). The organization reaches countries such as Haiti and Pakistan. La Leche League is considered the world-wide authority on breast-feeding.

La Leche League sponsors discussion groups, lecture series, and conferences specifically for parents. There are also conferences designed specifically for health care professionals. La Leche League publishes books, videos, pamphlets, and magazines to help mothers who want to breast-feed. To visit the La Leche League website, click here. “La leche” means “the milk.”
