Obtund
To make dull (not sharp), especially with regards to deadening pain and decreasing the intensity of sensations, usually unpleasant ones. Thus, to obtund makes the body less sensitive to pain and certain sensations. This decrease in sensation is usually done by decreasing consciousness with painkillers. Obtund comes from the Latin word "obtundo" meaning "to beat against." "To beat against" is a reference to making something less sharp by beating it.
