FEATURED BOOKS ON CANCER FROM BARNES & NOBLE.COM:
An oncologist is a physician (medical doctor) who specializes in oncology. In general, oncology is the study of the physical, biological, and chemical qualities and features of tumors (tissues that grow more rapidly than normal), such as their causes, development, and treatment. However, oncology can also be defined to mean the study of something that is malignant. Besides the above description of malignant, it can also mean resistant to treatment, severe, becoming worse over time, and frequently causing death.
Oncologist comes from the Greek word "onkos" meaning "swelling," and the Greek word "logos" meaning "the study of." Put the two words together and you have "study of swelling." The word swelling is used because it tumor often appears as a swelling
