A pachymeter is an instrument that is used to measure the thickness of an object. Pachymeters are mostly used to measure the thickness of thin objects such as plates, bones, tissues, or membranes. A membrane is a thin layer of flexible tissue that covers something. Pachymeter comes from the Greek word "pachys" meaning "thick," and the Greek word "metron" meaning "measure." Put the words together and you have "thick measure."
