Thecal sac
A thin walled tube filled with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that surrounds the spinal cord . CSF is the cushiony fluid that protects the brain and spine and helps distribute nutrients to these structures. A picture of the thecal sac is shown below:

The thecal sac is purposely entered during a spinal tap (also known as a lumbar puncture). A spinal tap is a procedure in which a needle is inserted into a space inside the spinal canal for the purpose of removing some of the cerebrospinal fluid. The spinal canal is the space between the spinal cord and the bony structure that surrounds it.
